Free printable and online worksheets to help Grade 6 students review how to find the area of different types of polygons: squares, rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids and composite shapes.
Finding the area of polygons involves using different formulas and methods depending on the type and complexity of the polygon. Here are some formulas to calculate the area for various types of polygons:
For a triangle with base b and height h:
Area = 1/2 × b × h
For a rectangle with length 𝑙 and width 𝑤:
Area = 𝑙 × 𝑤
For a square with side length 𝑠:
Area = 𝑠 2
For a parallelogram with base b and perpendicular height h:
Area = b × h
For a trapezoid with parallel bases a and b, and height h:
Area 1/2 × (a + b) × h
You may also need to decompose a complex shape (composite shape) into simpler shapes and then find the sum of the areas of the simpler shapes.
